Benefits for Students with Disabilities: The 2026 Strategy

Quick Summary

Our guide to Benefits for Students with Disabilities provides essential information about your rights and how to maximise your award.

Benefits for Students with Disabilities: The 2026 Strategy

1. The "Student Status" Problem

In the UK, most full-time students are barred from claiming Universal Credit. However, if you have a disability or health condition, there are specific gateways that allow you to claim both your student loan and your benefits.

2. Claiming Universal Credit as a Student

You can only claim UC while studying full-time if: 1. You receive PIP or DLA. 2. AND you have been found to have a "Limited Capability for Work" (LCW) by the DWP *before* your course starts.

Expert Warning: This is a major "catch-22." If you start your course before your WCA assessment is finished, the DWP will likely close your claim. You must try to get your WCA decision *before* you enrol.

3. Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA)

DSA is a grant (not a loan) to cover the extra costs you have because of your disability while studying.
  • What it covers: Specialist equipment (laptops, software), non-medical helpers (notetakers, mentors), and extra travel costs.
  • PIP Interaction: Getting DSA does NOT affect your PIP. In fact, the "Needs Assessment" report for your DSA is excellent evidence to use for your PIP claim.

4. How Student Loans affect your Universal Credit

If you are eligible for UC as a student, your Maintenance Loan will be counted as income.
  • The Math: The DWP will ignore certain parts of the loan (like the Special Support Element) but will deduct most of the loan from your UC award, usually on a monthly basis.
  • The Result: Often, your UC payment will drop to £0 during the academic year, but your "Housing Element" (rent help) may still be paid.

5. PIP for Students

PIP is not affected by student status.
  • You can claim PIP regardless of whether you are studying full-time, part-time, or not at all.
  • Tip: If your disability affects your ability to study (e.g., you need extra time for exams, you struggle with social interaction in lectures), make sure to mention this in your PIP form. It proves functional limitation.

6. Council Tax for Students

  • Full-time students are exempt from Council Tax.
  • If you live in a house where everyone is a full-time student, you pay £0 council tax.
  • If you live with one non-student, they get a 25% discount.

7. Checklist for Disabled Students

1. Apply for PIP early: It is the "key" that unlocks other benefits. 2. Apply for DSA: Do this as soon as you apply for your university place via UCAS. 3. WCA Assessment: Try to get your "Limited Capability for Work" status confirmed by the DWP at least 3 months before your course starts. 4. Special Support Element: Ensure Student Finance England knows you are eligible for benefits so they give you the "Special Support" part of the loan, which is ignored by the DWP.
