What is PIP?

Understanding Personal
Independence Payment

Personal Independence Payment (PIP) is a UK benefit for people aged 16 to 64 who have a long-term physical or mental health condition or disability.

It's not based on your diagnosis, but on how your condition affects you in your daily life. You can get PIP even if you are working, have savings, or are receiving other benefits.

The goal of PIP is to help with the extra costs of living with a disability. It is split into two parts: Daily Living and Mobility.

Scoring Points

You score points for each activity based on the level of help you need.

  • Standard Rate8-11 Points
  • Enhanced Rate12+ Points

Points are assessed independently for both components.

The 4 Reliability Criteria

This is the secret to a successful PIP claim. If you can't do an activity following these four rules, you shouldn't be scored as 'able'.

Safely

Can you do the activity without putting yourself or others at risk? This includes risks of falling, burning yourself, or causing physical harm.

Repeatedly

Can you do the activity as often as it is reasonably required? For example, if you can prepare one meal but are then too exhausted to do anything else, you can't do it repeatedly.

Acceptable Standard

Can you do the activity well enough? If your cooking is unsafe to eat or you can't wash yourself properly, it's not to an acceptable standard.

Reasonable Time

Does it take you more than twice as long as someone without your condition? If so, the DWP should consider you unable to do the activity.

The 12 Activities

Every PIP assessment covers these specific areas of your life. Jennifer guides you through each one to find where you struggle.

Don't ignore activities because they seem 'easy'. Even needing small help or reminders counts toward your points.

Common PIP Questions

How many points do I need for PIP?
You need 8 points for the Standard rate and 12 for Enhanced rate in either Daily Living or Mobility. You can receive both components independently at different rates.
Can I get PIP for a mental health condition?
Yes. Mental health conditions including anxiety, depression, PTSD, ADHD, autism, and bipolar all qualify if they affect your ability to carry out daily living or mobility activities reliably and safely.
What is the PIP reliability criteria?
To score PIP descriptor points, you must be able to do an activity Safely, to an Acceptable standard, Repeatedly (as often as needed), and within a Reasonable time (no more than twice as long as someone without your condition). If you fail any one of these, you cannot claim to complete the activity.
What should I do if my PIP was refused?
Request a Mandatory Reconsideration within 1 month of your decision letter. Call 0800 121 4433 and request the PA4 assessment report first so you can identify errors in the assessor's reasoning.
How long does a PIP claim take?
Currently, most PIP claims take between 3 and 6 months from initial call to decision. You may be able to request a paper-based assessment to speed up the process if your evidence is comprehensive.
