UC and the Severe Disability Premium (SDP) Protection (2026)
1. What was the Severe Disability Premium (SDP)?
Under the old "legacy" benefit system (like Income-Related ESA or Housing Benefit), severely disabled people who lived alone received an extra payment called the Severe Disability Premium (SDP), worth about £81 a week. The Problem: Universal Credit (UC) abolished the SDP. There is no equivalent element in UC.
2. Transitional Protection (The "SDP Shield")
To prevent disabled people from losing £300+ a month overnight, the government introduced Transitional Protection. If you were receiving the SDP on a legacy benefit and you are "naturally migrated" to Universal Credit (e.g., because you moved to a new council area), your UC award will include a Transitional Element.
- This element tops up your UC to ensure you do not receive less money than you were getting on the legacy system at the point you moved over.
3. How the Transitional Element Erodes
The Transitional Element is not permanent. It "erodes" (decreases) over time.- The Rule: Every time your Universal Credit increases (e.g., because of the annual April uprating, or because your rent goes up), your Transitional Element decreases by the exact same amount.
- The Result: Your total UC payment stays exactly the same for several years, while the cost of living goes up. Eventually, the Transitional Element disappears completely.
4. Losing the Protection Entirely
There are specific events that will cause you to lose your Transitional Protection immediately: 1. A partner moves in: If you become a "couple" for benefit purposes, the protection ends. 2. You drop below the earnings threshold: If you were working and your earnings drop below the Administrative Earnings Threshold for 3 consecutive months. 3. Your UC claim ends: If your UC claim is closed (even for one month) and you have to re-apply, the protection is gone forever.5. Managed Migration vs. Natural Migration
- Managed Migration: The DWP sends you a "Migration Notice" telling you to move to UC. In this case, you are guaranteed Transitional Protection (even if you weren't getting the SDP).
- Natural Migration: You experience a "Change of Circumstances" (like moving house to a new local authority) that forces you to claim UC. Here, you only get Transitional Protection if you were previously receiving the SDP.
6. Expert Tip: Carer’s Allowance Warning
If someone starts claiming Carer’s Allowance or the Carer Element of UC for looking after you, your SDP (or your Transitional Protection based on the SDP) will STOP.- You must be very careful when family members apply to be your carer, as it can inadvertently cause you to lose hundreds of pounds a month in transitional protection.
