Attendance Allowance Explained: The 2026 Guide

If you have reached State Pension age and have a physical or mental disability that makes it difficult to look after yourself, you may be eligible for Attendance Allowance. Unlike PIP, Attendance Allowance does not have a mobility component, but it provides vital cash support for care needs.

How Much Can You Get?

In 2026, there are two rates of Attendance Allowance:

  • Lower Rate: ~£75.85pw – if you need frequent help during the day OR night.
  • Higher Rate: ~£113.30pw – if you need help during both the day AND night, or if you are terminally ill.

Applying for Attendance Allowance?

Our Eligibility Checker can help you identify the specific care needs the DWP is looking for on the application form.

The '6-Month' Rule

To qualify, you must normally have had your disability or health condition for at least 6 months. However, if you are terminally ill, you can receive the higher rate immediately under "Special Rules."

It is Not Means-Tested

Similar to PIP, Attendance Allowance is not affected by your savings or other income. You can be a millionaire with a private pension and still receive full Attendance Allowance if you have care needs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does it affect my State Pension?

No. It is paid on top of your State Pension. In fact, getting it might increase your eligibility for Pension Credit.

Do I need to have a carer?

No. You don't need to actually have someone caring for you; the benefit is based on the need for care, not whether you are receiving it.
