The "Most Days" Rule: When choosing an option, think about what applies to you for more than 50% of the time. If you can perform a task but it puts you in pain or is unsafe, you should score as if you cannot do it.

How PIP Points Work

Personal Independence Payment (PIP) is not award based on your medical condition alone. It is awarded based on your functional ability across 12 specific activities. Each activity has several "descriptors" which carry different point values.

To qualify for the Standard Rate of either component, you must score at least 8 points. For the Enhanced Rate, you need 12 points or more. Our calculator uses the official DWP points system to give you an accurate estimate.

The Importance of Reliability

Legally, you are only considered "able" to do a task if you can do it reliably. This means you must be able to do it:

  • Safely: Without risk of injury to yourself or others.
  • To an acceptable standard: Not just a "basic" attempt.
  • Repeatedly: As often as reasonably required.
  • In a reasonable time: No more than twice as long as a non-disabled person.
