The Sure Start Maternity Grant is a one-off payment of £500 to help with the costs of having a baby. It is tax-free and does not have to be paid back.
1. The 'First Child' Rule
In 2026, you can usually only get the grant if the baby you are expecting is the only child under 16 in your home.
Technical Exception: You can get a second grant if you are expecting **multiples** (e.g. twins or triplets), even if you already have children in the house.
🚀 The Hustler's Strategy: The 'Twin Balance'
Expect twins? You don't just get £500.
Keyword Strategy: If you already have one child and then have twins, you are entitled to **£500**. If you have NO children and then have twins, you are entitled to **£1,000**. If you are a surrogate or adopting, you can also claim the grant if the baby is under 1 year old at the time of claim.
2. Qualifying Benefits 2026
You must receive one of the following to qualify:
- Universal Credit: You must have received a payment in the last month.
- Income Support: (Legacy benefit).
- Tax Credits: Specifically Working Tax Credit with a disability element or Child Tax Credit (at a rate higher than the family element).
- Pension Credit: Guarantee Credit or Savings Credit.
3. The Tight Deadline
The DWP is incredibly strict on timing for this grant. You can claim from **11 weeks before** the baby is due, up until **6 months after** the baby is born.
If you miss the 6-month deadline by even one day, the DWP will reject the claim without exception.
Maternity Grant FAQs
How do I apply?
You must download form **SF100** and get your midwife or GP to sign it before posting it to the DWP. You cannot currently apply online.
Does it affect my other benefits?
No. The grant is ignored as income for Universal Credit and does not count towards the benefit cap.
