PIP Review Process Explained

PIP awards are rarely permanent. Most awards are given for a fixed period (e.g., 2, 5, or 10 years). As your award approaches its end date, the DWP will initiate a PIP Review.

The AR1 'Award Review' Form

The review usually starts with a shorter form called the AR1. This asks if there have been "any changes" to your condition since your last assessment.

When Do Reviews Happen?

The DWP normally sends out the review paperwork 12 months before your current award is due to end. This ensures there is plenty of time to process the review without your payments stopping.

Reporting a Change Yourself

You don't have to wait for a scheduled review. If your health significantly worsens, you can report a "Change of Circumstances" to the DWP at any time. This may lead to an early review and a potential increase in your award.

Frequently Asked Questions

Could my PIP be reduced during a review?

Yes. The DWP can decide to leave your award as it is, increase it, reduce it, or stop it entirely based on the review.

What if my condition is stable?

If your condition is lifelong and unlikely to improve, you may receive a "Light Touch" review every 10 years.
