Universal Credit Payment Schedules Explained
Universal Credit is paid monthly in arrears. Your "assessment period" is a period of one month that begins on the day you make your claim. You usually receive your payment 7 days after the end of each assessment period.
What happens if my date falls on a weekend?
If your payment date is on a Saturday or Sunday, you will almost always be paid on the Friday before. This ensures you have access to your funds before the weekend. The same rule applies to bank holidays (e.g., if your payment falls on Christmas Day, you would typically be paid on the 24th or earlier).
Changing your payment date
In Scotland, you can choose to be paid twice a month rather than once. In the rest of the UK, you can only change your payment frequency in exceptional circumstances (Alternative Payment Arrangements) if you are struggling with budgeting.
