Universal Credit is the primary benefit for UK residents on a low income. It is designed to mimic a single monthly wage, consolidating several older benefits into one payment.

The Earnings Taper

For every £1 you earn from work, your Universal Credit payment is reduced by 55p. This is known as the taper rate. However, some claimants receive a "Work Allowance," which lets them earn a specific amount before the taper applies.

The 2-Child Limit

The DWP generally only pays the child element for the first two children in a family. There are exceptions for multiple births (twins) or if a child was born before 6 April 2017. Our calculator factors this in based on your total child count.

Disclaimer: This calculator provides an estimate based on current DWP legislation. It is not an official guarantee of payment. Benefit rates change every April, and individual circumstances like local council tax or benefit caps may affect your final award.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Work Allowance?

A Work Allowance is the amount you can earn before your Universal Credit is reduced. You get one if you or your partner are responsible for a child, or have a disability or health condition that affects your ability to work.

When will I receive my first payment?

It usually takes 5 weeks to receive your first payment after you apply. This includes an assessment period of one month and a 7-day payment delay. You can request an "Advance Payment" if you struggle during this time.
